Elite Mat Standards

Professor Victor Torres
Head Instructor — Founder
“Jiu-Jitsu is not just a sport. It’s a way of looking at life’s challenges with a calm and technical mind.”
Train Both
One membership covers both — you are not choosing a side.
Gi vs No-Gi at a glance
What you wear
Jacket, pants, and belt — the traditional uniform.
A rash guard and shorts. Nothing to grip but the person.
The pace
Slower. Grips hold, escapes take longer, positions stick.
Faster and slipperier. Thirty seconds of control becomes five.
What it sharpens
Precision and patience over raw athleticism.
Pressure, timing, and movement.
Closest to
The classical art and its deepest technical foundation.
Wrestling, and the grappling used in MMA.
Belts
Where the belt system lives, and where rank is awarded.
No belt on the mat — your rank carries over from the gi.
Most people start with whichever class fits their week — and within a month, almost everyone trains both.
Gi Jiu-Jitsu in Troy
The gi is the traditional uniform, and training in it slows the game down: the jacket and belt give both people something to grip, so position and patience matter more than speed.
Most people who want the classical art start here. It is also where the belt system lives.
No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu & Submission Grappling
No-gi is the same art in shorts and a rash guard. With nothing to grip, the pace rises and the game leans on body position, pressure, and timing.
It is the format closest to wrestling and to MMA, and it is where a lot of people find their footing fastest.
Your First Class
An hour, and you will not be thrown in at the deep end.
- First 10 minutes Arrive, meet a coach, and get shown where to change. Wear a t-shirt and shorts without zips or pockets.
- Next 15 Warm-up and basic movement — how to fall safely and how to move on the ground. No partner yet.
- Next 20 One technique, broken down and drilled slowly with a partner who knows you are new.
- Last 15 Rounds at the end are optional. Say so and you sit them out — nobody will ask twice, and nobody will think less of you.
What Our BJJ Students Say
Awesome gym with top notch coach, instructors and a great community. Training in both Muay Thai and Jiu Jitsu here has been an incredible experience. Everyone's friendly, the vibe is motivating, and the instruction is high quality. Highly recommend to anyone looking to train and grow.
Great BJJ, great guys. The style of teaching is definitely different from what I'm used to, but in the best way, refreshing and a solid change of pace. Vic's years of experience really show.
Common Questions
What is the difference between gi and no-gi?
The gi is the traditional jacket, trousers and belt; no-gi is shorts and a rash guard. In the gi both people can grip the cloth, which slows things down and rewards patience. Without it the pace rises and the game leans on body position and timing. Same art, two dialects.
Which should a beginner start with?
Either. Most people start in the gi because the slower pace gives you time to think, but plenty begin with no-gi and are perfectly happy. One membership covers both, so you can try each and decide.
Do I need to buy a gi for my first class?
No. Come in a t-shirt and shorts for your first week and see whether you like it before buying anything.
What actually happens in a first class?
A warm-up, one technique drilled slowly with a partner who knows you are new, and optional rounds at the end. The hour is broken down on this page under "Your First Class".
